The project is based on the ‘Working Rite’ model originally developed in Scotland. This is the first of its type in England. It provides placements/temporary jobs for NEET young people, especially those in priority areas and at greatest risk, of up to 6 months with selected individual tradespeople in SMEs. The young people work alongside these tradespeople (most often working in small companies or self employed) gaining skills and mentoring on a one to one basis and being paid minimum wage at the same time. There is no obligation to employ at the end of the placement period. The project not only provides skills to young people, it also helps educate tradespeople and employers about modern training and qualifications. It also provides an additional, bonus for the RSL. By giving NEET young people work placements and interests, it helps to reduce anti social behaviour on estates, such as the Manor Estate where the project is based (and which belongs to Places for People).

The Centre Manager’s role includes bringing together Accent and Youthbuild Trust training provision. It involves agreement up front on paying the percentage of overall costs plus provision of work experience by contractors and sub contractors.
